History & Materials
The story
The composition came from Hughes’s 1894 illustration for a story by Straparola. A demon called Fafarello became a horse and flew Isabella to Flanders, where her husband had abandoned her for another woman. Eight years later Hughes returned to it as A Dream Idyll, with no story attached. In 1904 the same work was exhibited as A Valkyrie—a Norse figure who chose which warriors would die in battle.
