History & Materials
The story
In 1893, this watercolor was mistaken for an oil painting and coated with egg white, despite a warning that moisture would damage it. Burne-Jones thought it ruined. Five years later the coating was removed, and he repainted the woman’s damaged head—just weeks before his death.
