History & Materials
The story
The dancer Loïe Fuller became famous in Paris by performing her Serpentine Dance with vast white skirts under colored lights. When Repose appeared at a Paris Salon in 1895, critics saw Fuller’s whirling skirts in the gown; Gil Baer caricatured the painting as Loïe Fuller au repos—“Loïe Fuller at rest.”
